The Tooele rail line would be an integral part of the broader inland port in SL City, and have a profound environmental/public health impact on the Salt Lake Valley and its residents. More specifically, Tooele is part of the Wasatch Front airshed, which is in perpetual non-attainment status for ozone and PM2.5. Not only will the train traffic alone be a significant new source of air pollution (one train's locomotives will produce as much pollution as about 10,000 cars), but the railway will lead to tens of thousands more daily diesel trucks in and out of Tooele and the Salt Lake Valley. For this reason and many others, the STB must require the applicant to complete an environmental assessment on Salt Lake And Tooele Counties.
