Dear Sirs, I oppose the merger for one simple reason: a foreign nation (Canada) should not have a controlling interest in the infrastructure of the United States of America…especially a Class 1 railroad. There used to be a time when there were innumerable Class 1 railroads within the United States of America and now they have been whittled down to five excluding CN and CP. With this impending merger/acquisition, the STB further consolidates the railway industry and as such further limits the choices available to customers and the public. Furthermore and recapitulating an aforementioned point; a Class 1 railway in the United States of America will fall under the aegis of a foreign company who will potentially impose the values and Human Resources practices of another country upon citizens of the United States who will work for “CPKC.” The divestment of a Class 1 railway, like KCS, that has a 140 year history, threatens the sovereignty of the United States and its citizenry. As such, it would be a great mistake to ratify this merger as it will cede yet another American industry to a foreign power as was done throughout the 1980’s leaving our manufacturing base neutered and deracinated. It’s time for a government bureaucracy (STB) funded by American tax dollars to do the will of the American people and not what shareholders and Wall Street advocates. Vote no.
