My biggest concern is the potential derailment of a train at the Iowa American water treatment facility near the Village of East Davenport. If the water treatment facility is contaminated or damaged by a derailment, the water supply for the entire Quad City area will be affected. We get our water from the Mississippi and cannot run the risk of tainting or eliminating the supply. The following is from a Quad City Times newspaper article published on December 16, 2021: Canadian Pacific's main line also bisects Iowa American Water's treatment facility on the eastern edge of Davenport and operates a spur line that borders the northern edge of the plant. The private utility is the only provider of clean drinking water for six cities and Scott County. "These facilities must be readily accessible and have protections against possible emergency situations in the event of a train derailment," Spiegel wrote. The probability of which Davenport Mayor Mike Matson fears will increase with the significant increase in train traffic. If this merger takes place, there needs to be barriers constructed to protect the plant and river from such an accident. Loss of our water supply would be a monumental disaster.
