Regarding the KP-KCS railroad merger, my wife Martha and I are soundly against this transaction for these reasons: We live directly across the Mississippi River from LeClaire, IA, on the proposed route considered. We already can hear the obnoxious horn blowing at every crossing and feel the vibrations from these increasingly lengthy trains. This disruption of our lives will double or triple if this merger takes place. Also, there was a serious train derailment recently in the LeClaire, IA business area. This is a busy and thriving tourist shopping area and boating launch area. Besides the obvious noise and access problems, the degree of danger is huge. The train horns are so loud here that we have to blast our tv volume or play music too loud to mask the sound from these trains. And that is not even enough. Forget being able to sit outside on our deck and listen to nature’s sounds. This is intrusive, unwanted noise in an already noisy world. To double or triple this intrusion is unacceptable and illegal. Yes, railroads were here first, but that doesn’t give them the right to take over U. S. citizen’s and taxpayer’s rights to living a peaceful existence in our dream home. We are former public school teachers who wish to enjoy our retirement in a reasonably peaceful manner. If this merger goes through, we will be initiating or joining any class-action lawsuits that oppose this intrusion on our lives!
