The tracks are two feet from the embankment of the Mississippi River near my house. When/ if rail cars derail and contaminate this waterway what will be the impact on drinking water, wildlife, water life? When the last derailment happened in LeClaire the cars ended up on the levee. Could we be that lucky again? Water is a precious commodity as we have seen this summer. Is the economic gain for the railroad worth this risk? The speed limit for cars in town is 25 but trains thunder through at 55mph. Why? Longer, faster, increased numbers of trains exponentially increases the risks of contamination to a resource we can’t live without !
