I live in the blast zone. As a part of my work as a journalist I have studied oil vs rail and I want to go on record as being opposed to the merger of Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City (KCS) Southern railroad and I see the resulting increased oil traffic as presenting an increased risk that isn't worth the price. Except there is no price for the merged entity and the people who will pay the price are those who live with the trains and their liability. This is the time for the world to take Indigenous wisdom to the heart of our systems - including energy. We have to turn this carbon train around before it is too late and the levels push us to the brink of environmental collapse. I stand with the White Earth Nation to demand a deposit in case of damages. Where is the “No bankruptcy” clause? No matter what the tribe, extractive industry's impact is felt in a deeper way by people whose culture and tradition is to honor the earth as a mother. The time is now to turn the train around on fossil fuel extraction and now is not the time to double down on systems guaranteed to increase climate chaos. I have learned a lot in my years of being connected to White Earth Reservation communities. I feel a close tie to the lands that fall within the 1855 Treaty and want to protect the waters of Northern Minnesota for future generations. Big Agriculture has already ruined the water in Southern Minnesota so we have to take care because the time is now.
