I’m a student in graduate school in the Quad Cities, and there have been several instances in which I’ve been stuck behind the train on my way to class. Given the amount of current train traffic, I can’t see how this exponential increase is sustainable. Such a drastic increase in rail traffic will make it harder for emergency services to operate, and I worry that many of Iowa’s historic districts on the Mississippi will be rendered useless. While I’m sure Canadian Pacific will enjoy the profits from this merger, it will only hurt communities in Eastern Iowa and surrounding states. I encourage the STB to deny this proposal, considering that there is slim to no benefit of the project for anyone other than Canadian Pacific.
