I understand the importance of rail to transport goods and build local economies. Minnesota was built on the railroads. These transportation lanes have allowed our communities to thrive. Rail traffic is an unavoidable fact of life in a lot of Minnesota. Both people and businesses understand the need behind the loud noises and time spent waiting for a train to pass. But this merger doesn’t serve a clear purpose outside of giving CP more control of its commerce. The merged line will increase the frequency trains pass by local communities, and some trains could reach up to 2.25 miles in length. This will create more delays for people, more frustration on the roads, and a bigger pain in the neck for all of us. For the sake of my community and the rest of Minnesota, I hope the STB requires CP to address community concerns before moving forward.
