I oppose the Canadian Pacific–Kansas City Southern rail merger. Minnesota has gorgeous natural resources, and our state parks are unmatched. Frankly, it's about more than the "gorgeous" factor here: it's about how those natural resources support delicate ecosystems, species of plants and animals that exist nowhere else in the state, and in few other places in the country. Oil spills that will result from any derailments after this merger will cause incalculable damage to Minnesota’s pristine landscape. This merger would encourage Canadian Pacific to run more trains through Minnesota, increasing the chances of derailments like we saw in Detroit Lakes just last week. That derailment happened only a few miles from where I spent the entire month of January, 2022 while serving as an Artist in Residence at the New York Mills Cultural Center. I shudder to think waht might have happened to that community, its inhabitants, and the lakes and farms nearby. This merger should not move forward.
