Proposed railroad merger is bad for Missouri In 2021, railroad companies Kansas City Southern and Canadian Pacific agreed to a whopping $31 billion merger. This merger would create a single-line railroad from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. Resulting from this merger, Missouri companies will be at a competitive disadvantage and that will result in higher costs, more trains on the routes, and longer trains to boot! If this proposed merger is approved, Missouri companies and their ability to bring products to market will be slowed down. The proposed merger will have areas seeing 14.4 trains a day that are twice as long. The Biden administration needs to urgently take a look at this merger, as the safety and quality of life in Missouri will be greatly affected by it. There are safety concerns across the state, and with the already worsening economy, Joe Biden shouldn’t want more businesses affected by this merger. The Surface Transportation Board and Congress, which have been charged with studying the merger, must take action and consider the economy for the average citizen, not just the trains getting longer and more frequent. A multi-billion-dollar merger doesn’t help the people of Missouri, rather hurts our economy, and affects our citizens.
