The City of Genoa appreciates the ability to voice concerns regarding the Canadian Pacific’s acquisition of the Kansas City rail. More specifically, the City is concerned about the environmental impact of a 100% train traffic increase as the Canadian Pacific railway runs all the way through the City. This additional train traffic would be noisy for residents at all hours of the day and night. Additionally, this will create traffic concerns as our police, fire, and EMS are all on the north side of the City which would be blocked from the south side of the City for additional time throughout the day and night with the increased train traffic. Furthermore, civilian traffic will also be blocked between the north and south side of our City while trains pass-through. The City of Genoa encourages the possibility of economic growth due to the acquisition of Kansas City and the City also appreciates its relationship with the Canadian Pacific thus far, however, the significantly increased traffic along the rail presents dire consequences to the safety and wellbeing of the residents of Genoa. Should this acquisition move forward and cause a 100% increase in train traffic, the City would request partnership with Canadian Pacific to establish quiet zones in City limits. Additionally infrastructure such as rail bridges would be necessary in order to reduce the adverse effect of the increased rail traffic. Taking into account that the rail divides the City of Genoa in half and runs through residential neighborhoods, the City of Genoa would be severely environmentally impacted with increased noise and traffic issues should improvements to the existing rail not be made.
