I took Metra from Roselle, IL to my job in Chicago for eighteen and a half years. It was extremely rare to have freight train interference and if we did, it was very brief (minutes). In contrast, I had a co-worker who took the BNSF line from Naperville, IL to Chicago. He was often late for work due to freight train interference on his line. In addition, I once had lunch with a friend in Downers Grove, IL which is on the BNSF line; the restaurant faced the train tracks. I was amazed at the number of freight trains that went past the restaurant during our meal; they went in each direction and were long and noisy. Most distressing of all was the number of "bomb" trains, the long trains of only liquid container cars, which can present a safety problem. I sincerely hope that the proposed merger between CP and KCS will not result in the kind of disruption that currently occurs on area train lines. Thank you for the opportunity to express my thoughts on this issue.
