FD 35095 · ALASKA RAILROAD CORPORATION – CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION EXEMPTION--A RAIL LINE EXTENSION TO PORT MACKENZIE, ALASKA

I have 2 major concerns about the Houston routes. These routes pass through the Big Lake Recreational Area and by Horseshoe and West Lake. 1. These two lakes are at the beginning of one of the drainage systems in the area. The lakes are feed directly from the wetland swamps that the rail road will pass through. Also these rainbow trout lakes are a still a few that are not yet invaded by Northern Pike. This railroad on this route would act as a dam and would affect the water flow, temperature, and water level of these two lakes and probably others in the surrounding area and down stream. This would affect the quality of life and create environmental damage. 2. Big Lake is the premier recreation area in the Mat-su Borough. It is also a rapidly growing area. Putting a railroad through this area will create conflict with snow machines and will create noise pollution. This route is passing directly through the most populated and quickest growing areas of all the routes selected. With a growing population and the area with of most use, this route will have the most adverse affects on the community.
