These comments are in support of the community's request to have an environmental impact statement for the current proposals for the 6th Street Embankment in Jersey City, as in accordance with Federal policy this action is likely to significantly affect the human environment in the local community and beyond. There are currently several competing proposals on the table, all of which would have major impacts on the historic downtown community, including the demolition and/or shoring up of the embankment for a multi-story condo development or housing as well, the establishment of a light rail line or a park/green space for the enjoyment of all. Demolition permits have already been applied for without the proper investigation as to the environmental impact of this action and the loss of this structure on the surrounding community. As it has already been more than 3 years since the land was sold to a developer, the STB should not now rush to proceed without the information accruing from a study to determine the full environmental impact of demolition and subsequent construction or the establishment of a green space in downtown Jersey City.
