My family and I live in Jersey City, very close to the railroad embankment which Conrail proposes to abandon. As a member of the community directly affected by the near certain demolition of this historic site, I believe that we need a full environmental impact study of the proposed abandonment and demolition of the Harsimus Branch. It would be highly negligent of the board to fail to consider the impact of the release of soil contaminants in the midst of a densely populated area. The preliminary testing that has been done so far is wholly inadequate, and must be followed-up by extensive testing of the landfill that would be removed and likely dispersed into the surrounding atmosphere. The Harsimus Branch was an industrial site for many years, the risk of contamination is very high, and the list of possible contaminating agents is frightening in the extreme. You hold the lives and health of generations of Jersey City residents in your hands. When you deliberate this issue, please consider your responsibility to our children and grandchildren.
