I live two doors down from the embankment on Jersey Ave. While I am deeply troubled by the prospect of the abandonment (and no doubt demolition) of a structure that offers so many great possibilities for improving my neighborhood and city, I am even more concerned that such a proposal might go through without conducting a thorough study of the impact these actions would have on our local environment. Dismantling the embankment, as some have proposed, would be a huge task, affecting every resident north and south of the structure for it's entire length for a considerable amount of time. I would have to live with work crews outside my house every day producing a huge amount of dust and debris from stone and unknown soil content from its years of use, not to mention noise and pollution from the construction traffic for months or years before a new structure is built. All of this does not take into account how the removal of so much soil would affect storm drainage and soil erosion once the structure is removed. Nor does it consider how this might impact the wildlife that no doubt uses the green space on top of the embankment as a safe haven from the rest of the city. For all of these reasons, I strongly urge you to conduct a thorough study on the impact these changes would have on our environment, quality of life for local residents, and subsequent use of the land.
