Abandonment of the Harsimus branch -- which would likely be followed by demolition -- would be a tragic mistake. The remarkable success of the preservation of the High Line in New York City provides a model easily transferred to Jersey City. Preservation and enhancement of the Harsimus Stem Embankment offers a rare opportunity to preserve valuable right-of-way for possible future transit services and create additional open space in a dense urban environment. The Embankment is historically significant and a much loved local landmark. We are requesting that the Surface Transportation Board prepare an Environmental Impact Statement as required by the National Environmental Policy Act. We believe a competent EIS will demonstrate conclusively that abandonment of the Harsimus Branch would be irresponsible and contrary to sound Federal policy. Thanks you.
