It's essential that an Environmental Impact Statement be prepared with respect to the Sixth Street Embankment. Jersey City needs to know what the effects will be on the community and the environment of the abandonment of the Harsimus Branch and the demolition of the Embankment. I believe abandonment and demolition is simply the wrong way to go for the Embankment. Not only will it be an environmental disaster (loss of habitat, air and water polution as a result of the demolition, etc.), but it will be a loss to the community. It should be preserved as open space for all the residents of Jersey City to enjoy. We have enough condos built or planned already. What we don't have is sufficient park space. In the downtown area, there is only Hamilton Park and Van Vorst Park - both of which are small, and which even together, are not big enough to service the needs of all of the new families and residents that have come to and will continue to arrive in the neighborhood over the coming years.
