My sister lives on Fifth Street, and I visit her often from the suburbs, where we enjoy more open space than is available in Jersey City. Her garden backs up to the south wall of the Harsimus Embankment, and is sheltered by the wall. Trees and flowers create a hanging garden above, and vines climb the wall. This space is especially treasured because so rare in an otherwise built-up city. On her block alone, there are 16 multi-unit buildings that back up to the Embankment, with perhaps a hundred or more residents living in them. I can't imagine what demolition of this structure would do to these buildings and these residents. Demolition would wreck these properties and property values, and threaten people's health and peace of mind. It is not only these private properties that would be damaged but also the ambiance of the entire area. Your decisions will affect the homes and well-being of so many people. At the very least, you should authorize a study to determine what the impacts of your decisions will be.
