Our community needs a full study of the effects that abandonment of the Harsimus Branch, and demolition of the Embankment, will have on our community and city. Abandonment of the Embankment will lead directly to its demolition. The negative effects of such a massive demolition are many and include impact to air quality, noise, potential damage to nearby historic buildings and homes, release of contaminants, habitat destruction and damage to local wildlife, amongst others. Only one preliminary study of contaminants has been done, and only on a section of the Branch. Conrail’s developer partner has not yet submitted results of an environmental sampling study to STB. The federal agency should enforce federal laws that protect the public interest rather than burdening local governments and citizens.
