Conrail and partner are currently seeking permits to demolition a large abandoned site that runs through the heart of Jersey City’s Historic District and at least two residential neighborhoods. It is Conrail’s blatant neglect of this site for decades that warrants a thorough and independent environmental impact study of this property. It is imperative that such a study be preformed to ensure against any possible adverse effects that the development of such a site could have on Jersey City’s neighborhoods and families. The released contaminants from such a large scale demolition will undoubtedly cause issues with concern to the health and welfare of our communities’ families. This situation calls for a federal agency to enforce federal laws rather than burdening local governments and its citizens.
