To Whom It May Concern: As a resident of Jersey City I am very concerned and alarmed by the ongoing neglect of the 'Embankment' by Conrail - not to mention their continuing bad faith in seeking demolition permits. The Embankment is an historic landmark of cultural importance to Jersey City and should be utlized and preserved in such a way that benefits the city, its residents, and visitors - not destroyed. As someone who lives directly across from the Embankment, I am also highly concerned that there has been no Environmental Impact Statement conducted! It seems obvious to me that if Conrail abandons and demolishes the Embankment, as a close resident I will have to deal with numerous possible health threats. Issues such as dust and air quality - not to mention the release of contaminants! Then there's the resultant heavy noise, vibrations and truck traffic through fragile and historic districts, and possible flooding. As a resident I can also attest to the fact that the Embankment serves as a major wildlife refuge to many local species of animal and bird, the loss of which would be a disgrace to say the least. The abandonment and consequent destruction of such a valuable cultural, historic and environmetal resource would be a tragedy for Jersey City. As a resident that daily enjoys the Embankment, I can honestly say that I do not know if I would continue to live here. I urge you - at the very least - to authorize an Environmental Impact Statement before Conrail's continued neglect (over decades!) leads to demolition and the loss of such a precious landmark and resource. Yours Sincerely, Sean Hagerty
