AB 167 (Sub-No. 1189X) · CONSOLIDATED RAIL CORPORATION--ABANDONMENT EXEMPTION--IN HUDSON COUNTY, N.J.

Comment EI-17219

We need an Environmental Impact Statement because we desperately need to forestall the negative impact on our community that would be caused by the abandonment of the Embankment. Abandonment would have dire consequences for our safety and health. Our air quality would be severely compromised. We would become more vulnerable to floods. We would be deprived of a precious local green" place--within walking distance--where we can be close to nature, breathe fresh air, and peacefully socialize with neighbors in the outdoors. The complex system of wildlife that enriches the area--birds species, butterflies, small mammals--would be lost to us forever. This loss would be extended to other nearby communities, through interconnected habitats and migration corridors. Our diverse cultures would be diminished, as festivals and celebrations would no longer be able to use this traditional venue. Without the Embankment, all local denizens--humans, trees, plants, companion animals--would become more vulnerable to diseases and blights caused by contaminated water and noise pollution. Even our precious historic buildings would suffer from increased toxic exhausts and destructive vibration. We must have an Environmental Impact Statement to ensure and preserve the health of our community."
