Please authorize an Environmental Impact Statement before abandonment causes severe adverse effects to Jersey City historic districts, landmarks, neighborhoods, and families. I believe in all kinds of community development and a reorganization of existing structures in order to maintain a well-balanced and efficient neighborhood, including affordable housing and residential development. I'm concerned about the environmental issues inherent in demolishing such a large structure, especially one that had been used for industrial purposes. Demolition will most certainly cause air contaminants, a flooded drainage system, an imbalance in the wildlife, increased exhaust from trucks, a strain on our roads, etc. But most important to me is that we recognize that development and demolition are not necessarily the same thing. To me, a community thrives best with outside-the-box thinking, particulary during these tough economic times, and particularly by employing methods, ideas, and processes that allow for a unique brand of development. City planning needn't be solely for the high rise residential design seen in other areas (think: Hoboken), and it's important for Jersey City to carve its unique niche within green communities surrounding New York. The High Line project in lower Manhattan is a wonderful example of the fusion of green architecture while keeping in mind its residential constituency. Jersey City would be remiss in its duties to its constituents if it were not to analyze every option for the Embankment from every possible angle, whether it be residential, commercial, green, or a hybrid design. Our leaders have a true chance to do something different and personal, and without an Environment Impact Statement, they move forward without the full weight of analysis presented to them. It would be like building a home without any hammers; the Impact Statement is a necessary tool in order to make informed decisions. Thank you for your time.
