Please authorize an Environmental Impact Statement before abandonment causes severe adverse effects to Jersey City historic districts, landmarks, and neighborhoods. As a former resident of the Van Vorst neighborhood of Jersey City adjacent to the subject site, I object to abandonment of the Harsimus Stem Embankment without further study. Abandonment will lead directly to demolition of this important cultural resource, which otherwise has the potential to provide a future greenway and light rail corridor through this dense city. In addition, demolition will cause significant short-term impacts in the form of heavy truck traffic, noise, dust and debris, and potential long-term impacts in the form of damage to buildings in this historic district and release of contaminants contained within the embankment.
