Prior to a decision on the abandonment of the Harsimus Branch I would like to see a thorough study of the likely environmental effects of the proposed uses. I understand there are currently three. 1. Demolition of the embankment and replacement with residential development. 2. Light Rail right of way. 3. Park with bicycle and foot paths. The first option seems likely to pose some serious environmental problems. In the short term, the demolition process seems likely to have adverse environmental effects on the surrounding area. Longer term, residential development seems likely to increase density and tax the infrastructure of an area already on the verge of over-development and destroy habitat for local wildlife and migrating birds. In contrast, the other options seem likely to provide environmental benefits by providing alternatives to automobile travel, providing green space where it is needed, and enhancing community life by connecting several neighborhoods.
