My name is Katharine Meyer. I am writing to ask you to do a full Environmental Impact Statement with regard to the proposed abandonment of the 6th Street Embankment in Jersey City. Your Environmental Assessment is just not enough. Taking down this gigantic historic structure will cause all sorts of environmental damage. It is clear that you have not studied this enough. Abandonment will lead to demolition which will wreck streets and many homes near the Embankment. The natural resources on top of the embankment will be ruined with your having done a real study to see what is up there. Jersey City has one of most severe open space deficits in the United States, and the area in which the Embankment is definitely the most densely populated area in Jersey City. To lose this open space will effect people’s heatlth and welfare throughout the City. Please do not give the permit to Conrail before you have conducted a very thorough Environmental study.
