As nearly a lifelong resident of Jersey City, I respectfully ask that the Surface Transportation Board require that Conrail perform a full Environmental impact study on the Entire Harsimus Branch before being abandon and demolish by Conrail. That route transported freight of various chemical and other hazardous materials. Currently, there are many residents and other people, including children who live and play in this area. They should know and made aware of any hazardous materials that may be in the area. As you probably know, the Harsimus Cove embankment was the life-line to the Historic Jersey City Warehouse district. (see http://www.jclandmarks.org/nomination-warehousedistrict.shtml) The Harsimus Cove South which was the railroad shipyard was a brownfield site. A site assessment revealed that the site contained petroleum compounds and the soil contained lead." (see page 20, http://cei.org/pdf/1782.pdf) Please reassure the City of Jersey City and the residents that our health and safety will not be comprised. Thank you for your attention. John Jarema Resident and native of Historic Jersey City."
