I urge you to authorize a thorough Environmental Impact Statement. The residents of Jersey City need an impartial study of the effects that abandonment and demolition will have on our community. I’ve lived in Jersey City for 24 years and feel as though the 6th Street Embankment is a part of not only Jersey City's history, but my history as well. The stone structure surely deserves it’s historic status in our historic district. This landmark stands as reminder and evidence of the railroad and industrial past of Jersey City. I believe that the survival of the Harsimus Stem Embankment as a series of consecutive blocks, running adjacent to Sixth Street is vital to our community. I feel strongly about maintaining the railroad corridor and turning the 6 block expanse into a lateral park and part of the East Coast Greenway Trail. A green space which could then connect to the Jersey City Waterfront. This property affords the city a unique opportunity to merge railway, park and trail. My concerns regarding the demolition of the walls are great. I worry about additional flooding in our community (these walls serve to retain rainwater). I anticipate much physical damage to the adjacent residences (most of which are registered as Historic and which exist on both sides of the Embankment). I also dread the traffic nightmares that will occur during the process of demolition and redevelopment, as well as additional parking problems which will come with more buildings. The embankment offers our community a real sense of place, and one that the developer (whom I believe still does not own the property, but rather took" illegally) has no understanding of or genuine interest in. Please help preserve this fabulous piece of history that helps ground our community and which holds so much promise for needed open space. We need a Federal Agency to enforce our federal laws. WE NEED AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT. Thank you for your attention."
