Please authorize an Environmental Impact Statement before abandonment causes severe adverse effects to Jersey City historic districts, landmarks, neighborhoods, and families. As someone who lives directly across from the Embankment, I am concerned about myriad negative issues associated with the demolition that an “abandonment” declaration would bring about. The amount of dirt, noise, vibrations, poor air quality, and general decline in the standard of living across from a huge construction site would be immediate and massive. The already overrun streets, due to mall traffic, would become impassible from the construction truck traffic. The risk of flooding, due to the area having no half-mile of fill to adsorb storm water in a flood plain, would increase and that risks ruining my home and that of my neighbors. The destruction of something as large as the Embankment risks severe environmental damage, not just from flooding, but from the release of contaminants and from the habitat destruction of several species of birds, butterflies, and other “friendly” insects, not to mention the risk of the proliferation of rats. The clear benefits of turning the Embankment into a park with historical, cultural, and economic significance should not be overlooked if Jersey City is to become a more attractive destination for individuals and families fleeing the exorbitant prices of Manhattan and Brooklyn, and give those of us who already live here an excellent reason to stay.
