AB 167 (Sub-No. 1189X) · CONSOLIDATED RAIL CORPORATION--ABANDONMENT EXEMPTION--IN HUDSON COUNTY, N.J.

Comment EI-16878

My name is Mattias Gustaffson, I live very near the Embankment with my wife and two girls. We are very concerned that the STB has not done a full Environmetnal Impact Statement. Your environmental assessment is not enough given the enormity of what would occur if the Embankment railline is abandoned and then torn down. This is a landmark that is in the middle of two neighborhoods that are also landmarks. You cannot allow someone to tear the heart out of the middle of the district and say that there is no impact. The impact is huge. There will be problems with flooding, worse than we already have, even with the Embankment there to soak up rain water, we still have flooding. There will be rats and vermin and there will just be dirt and dust and we do not know what chemicals there are in there. You can make guesses about this and you can take the word of Conrail whose reports would naturally show that there is ‘no problem’ but the citizens do not believe this. In New Jersey there is such a bad history of mishandling of environmental issues. We are watching you and we will hold the STB responsible if you do not do all you can to protect us, to protect our families. To not do an EIS is a crime when so many people’s health are at stake. I own a business near the Embankment and I expect it will suffer greatly from the disruption as well. Thank you for reconsidering and doing a full Environmental Impact Statement. Sincerely, Mattias Gustaffson
