AB 167 (Sub-No. 1189X) · CONSOLIDATED RAIL CORPORATION--ABANDONMENT EXEMPTION--IN HUDSON COUNTY, N.J.

Comment EI-16754

Received or sent (printed as 4/4/2009)

I urge you to authorize a FULL Environmental Impact Statement before abandonment causes severe adverse effects to Jersey City historic districts, landmarks, neighborhoods and families. The Harsimus Branch extends through neighborhoods located just 6 blocks from the Holland Tunnel. In 2008, 33,742,000 vehicles entered and exited the tunnel. The Harsimus Branch Embankment has, quite literally, become a source of oxygen in an exhaust-laden urban landscape. A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year. Demolition or development, which will follow shortly on the heels of abandonment, will deprive the surrounding neighborhoods of a much needed source of oxygen. Please examine fully the environmental ramifications of the upcoming abandonment decision. Thank you.
