Comment EI-16725

Received or sent (printed as 4/3/2009)

I am writing to request that an Environmental Impact Statement be prepared and released to the public before abandonment of the Embankment (quite literally in my backyard) incurs severe and irreversible environmental damage to the downtown Jersey City historic district and beyond. I fear that the air quality will be severely compromised due to the nature of the use of the embankment by Conrail for many years during the last century. I also have grave concerns about removing a structure that absorbs and contains massive amounts of water in a flood zone. I pay quite a bit of money for flood insurance as required by my mortgage company. I suspect that any attempt to remove or change this structure will cause severe flooding in a neighborhood that already suffers from flooding during severe storms. There is a great deal of wildlife that survives in this area on the top of the embankment. This is in an area that otherwise has scarce access to nature and the benefit that comes from living around green plants. Furthermore, last and not least, I am extremely distressed that this structure would be demolished to the possible detriment of the structural integrity of my own home of 23 years.
