We in Jersey City desperately need your help because our local officials seem powerless to do the right thing to protect us. We need a complete environmental study of our Harsimus Stem railroad embankment. What havoc it will wreak on us if it is demolished! With the bad stuff that has accumulated in it, and with its service as a sponge to help offset our local flooding due to an inadequate sewer system, for so many reasons we need to keep it. It is a precious source of open space that is so desperately needed in our urban environment, and a priceless historic resource. Our local officials have no idea about what is of real value. The irreplaceable historic warehouse district that the railroad trains went to after passing over the Embankment has been severely compromised through demolition already because of decisions made by our local politicians. (see photo) This must not happen to the Embankment as well. The photo is one I took as I happened to walk by when the first of our 19th century warehouses to be demolished was ripped down. It was sickening.
