STB should authorize a full environmental study of the Harsimus Branch, so decisionmakers have the best information available to them. Moreover, the Harsimus Brach is located in a very densely populated residential community. Destruction or modification of the Harsimus Branch could release toxins and other dangerous pollutants into the air and water. These possible effects most be studied and discussed to the fullest extent permitted by law. Furthermore, the Harsimus Branch is an important historical relic that distinguishes its neighborhood for its industrial heritage. It is critical that we preserve the Harsimus Branch for its historical value and its beauty as a wall of stone, a beauty that may not be easy to see at first glance, but reveals itself over time. It should also be preserved as open space in a densely populated city severely lacking open space. Please take all actions and decision within your power to protect the Harsimus Branch and the health, beauty and historical character of its surrounding community from the predations of a greedy developer.
