I am a homeowner who resides just steps away from the 6th street embankment. I also work as an architect with over 20 years of experience and am well aware of the impact that demolishing a structure such as the embankment would have on the community. From an environmental standpoint, it would destroy an oasis for birds and natural habitat and run the risk of releasing contaminants into the atmosphere. As a green space, the embankment does much to reduce the heat island and carbon footprint of the area. Being an asthma suffrer, I am particularly concerned about compromised air quality resulting from dust and debris and its effect on my health. From a quality of life standpoint, the demolition noise and congestion associated with mobilizing and staging of heavy equipment would be devastating. From a real value standpoint, surrounding properties (including the one I own) would experience a decline due to their close proximity to a work zone. I am personally concerned about potential structural damage to my 100 year+ historic home. From a cultural standpoint, the emankment's aesthetic supports the historic character of the neighborhood that is so appealing to residents and potential home buyers. For these reasons, I urge the Surface Transportation Board to review the impact of demolishing the embankment on the community as a whole, and request that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) be prepared so that all factors can be taken into account. Thank you. Renata Zednicek Senior Associate Perkins Eastman Architects
