I request that a full environmental impact statement be completed before Conrail is allowed to abandon the embankment to have it demolished by a developer. Demolishing the embankment may adversely affect the over 50 residences adjacent to the property, many of which are multiple dwelling residences; the over 50 residences that are located across the street, many of which are multiple dwelling residences; and the housing complex south of the property at the eastern end of it. The housing complex contains within it a day care center that is not more than 50 feet away from the property. This is a facility that my family and many of our friends use. Demolition equipment and work would disturb the general residential area and particulates generated by the demolition may adversely impact the air quality of the surrounding area. I do not know if the soil within the embankment contains and chemicals or toxins that may be disturbed and released if the embankment is demolished. Most importantly, the noise impact and particulates may have a significant impact on the day care facility. I would be concerned for the safety and health of my child if the demolition process would be allowed. Lastly, the property is adjacent to many well used streets - Jersey Ave, Erie St. Manilla Ave, Marin Blvd., and 6th Street. These streets are used by many as their primary route to the Holland Tunnel. Demolition may lead to closures and/or delays along these routes which may lead to increased traffic along other local streets. As such, I request a full and impartial study of direct and indirect effects of abandonment on our neighborhoods and families.
