The Atwater Township Board of Trustees, along with the Atwater Fire Department Chief, have identified several areas of concern regarding the increased train traffic through our township as a result of this merger. Atwater Township has six crossings that bisect throughout the township along with three major state routes. Our most immediate concern is the ability for our emergency personnel to be able to reach our residents for medical, environmental, and/or vehicle accidents occur. Communication on closures or stopped trains MUST be conveyed to our safety services in a more timely and efficient manner. Concerning the 9.04 TPD factor that exceeds thresholds will significantly increase noise with train horns required to blow 15-20 seconds ahead of every crossing - certain areas of the town could experience a near continuous wall of sound. With the 19% mGTMs growth; those heavier loads will increase the low-frequency noise and ground vibrations that can adversely affect home structure and foundations. To reiterate - Atwater Township puts the safety of our residents, along with those individuals traveling through our town, as our number one concern regarding this increase in train traffic and tonnage per train. There must be better and more prompt communication regarding issues, whether it be regular maintenance, emergency closures, trains stalled at crossings, or derailments.
