Here are the key issues I am concerned about based on Docket No. FD 36873. 1. Increased Rail Traffic and Facility Activity * Forest Park, GA: Additional activity could worsen an already significant issue. Daily trains are parked over the tracks, cutting off access to the heart of the city. People crawl over or under the trains while they're parked. This is dangerous, and NOW it could happen more often each day. * Concerns about the materials transferred through our city. People live, study, work, and play near the train line. * Noise is already a factor when trains pass through the city with their horns and train movement. * Rail yard traffic is already high; this would allow additional trains to be stationed on tracks within the city, blocking the main thruways that cross the tracks. 2. Geographic Scope of Impact * This is concerning for towns along the rail line. What changes could affect environments, communities, and transportation systems? The train has already affected our daily lives. Could this mean road changes, such as tunnels; definitely air quality issues; and larger transportation systems being built within our city? 3. Capital Improvements * As noted above, these are concerning issues. 4. Compliance with Environmental Laws * Numerous news stories report derailments and environmental issues, including dangerous materials released into local communities’ air. How are these regulated, and what procedures are in place to ensure safe tracks? 5. Air Quality and Nonattainment Areas * No trains should be allowed to run through ANY area that will worsen air pollution concerns. 6. Cultural and Community Resources * If there are potential effects on cultural resources and protected resources, why are we talking about expanding the rail system? I do not agree with what this merger presents to our community and other communities on the train line.
