My name is Monica Cruz, and as your candidate for Mayor and former city councilwoman for the City of Eagle Pass, I want to make a clear and decisive statement regarding my opposition to the proposed Puerto Verde Global Trade Bridge project. I wish to clearly state my opposition to the proposed Puerto Verde Global Trade Bridge project as currently presented. While I strongly support progress and economic growth, I cannot support any initiative that risks negatively impacting our community, our taxpayers, and our environment. Firstly, the proposed Puerto Verde project poses significant economic concerns, with projected revenue losses surpassing $6 million burden our community simply cannot afford. I will not stand by and allow decisions that place unnecessary financial hardship on our taxpayers. Secondly, this project disregards Maverick County’s own feasibility study, conducted precisely to identify alternatives that minimize community disruption. That study recommended a location several miles outside our city limits, designed to foster trade growth without sacrificing our neighborhoods. Additionally, the environmental implications extend beyond the Seco Mines area, affecting our entire city and county. We must evaluate and address the potential damage to our environment before moving forward. Transparency, accountability, and community engagement should guide every major project. The residents of Eagle Pass deserve a voice and a choice in matters that directly affect their livelihoods and quality of life.
