I STRONGLY OPPOSE this project for several important reasons. First, transporting hazardous materials by rail would seriously increase the risk of spills, leaks, or even explosions, putting the safety of our families and homes at risk. On top of that, building a Hazardous Materials Pit so close to our only water source, the Rio Bravo River, is incredibly dangerous. One accident could contaminate the river and affect our entire community. We’re already dealing with traffic congestion, even when it’s not rush hour, and adding this project would only make things worse. Delays like that are more than just frustrating because they can be life-threatening. I’ll never forget when a neighbor’s house caught fire. It took the Fire Department 35 minutes to get there, and by then, the flames had spread to another house nearby. Both homes were almost completely destroyed, though thankfully the families made it out with only minor injuries. With our closest Fire Department about 3 miles away and the hospital another 5 miles beyond that, any extra congestion could be deadly in an emergency. Another big concern is pollution. This project would add to the already poor air quality in our area, which means more cases of lung cancer, asthma, and other health issues. It would also disturb the local wildlife, like deer and hogs, throwing off the natural balance around us. Plus, the fact that they’re considering building railroad tracks in a known flood zone is asking for a disaster. Most of all, this project would change the feel of our community, making it noisier, more dangerous, and less peaceful. Our way of life matters, and this project would take too much away from the people who call this place home.
