Dear Andrea, I am reaching out to you with deep concerns regarding the proposed construction and operation of the Green Eagle Railroad in Maverick County, Texas. While economic development is often seen as positive, it must not come at the expense of our community's well-being and environmental health. A critical issue at hand is the displacement of local residents due to the railroad's construction. It's distressing to learn that many homeowners are being offered inadequate compensation for their properties, leaving them in precarious situations with few options for relocation. This not only disrupts the lives of these families but also undermines the cohesion of our community. Moreover, the potential environmental risks associated with the railroad are troubling. The hazmat emergency drip pit poses a significant threat of contaminating the Rio Grande, a crucial water source for both human consumption and ecological balance. The fallout from such contamination could be devastating, impacting not only our immediate surroundings but also neighboring communities downstream. I'm particularly concerned about the proximity of a school to the proposed railroad route. The safety and well-being of our children must be our top priority, and any project that jeopardizes their health or education is unacceptable. The railroad's operations may introduce air pollution, raising health concerns such as asthma, especially among low-income communities of color who are often disproportionately affected by transportation-related pollution, including school buses. We cannot afford to compromise their futures. Additionally, the construction and operation of the railroad pose a threat to local wildlife habitats and natural ecosystems, further disrupting the delicate balance of our environment. Eagle Pass boasts diverse flora and fauna, and it's our duty to safeguard and conserve these resources for generations to come.
