I am writing to oppose the green railroad as it poses tremendous risk to our environment. It will no doubt contaminate our air water. Seco Mines has many flooding zones and there are already several nice neighborhoods and business there where the train will pass by. Further to the outside we have ranches with their animals & crops. Some people here enjoy harvesting their crops as naturally and safe as possible without chemicals and with the railroad the soil, water, and air will all be contaminated. Besides livestock there are also endangered species like the Ocelot which will all be hurt by this railroad. There are several schools in that area and not too far from Seco Mines is the north of Eagle Pass where both the Eagle Pass high school & junior high reside. The traffic will be unbearable. Not to mention the serious harm to our children. I am someone who truly does value the environment and health. We do not have the list of everything that the railroad will carry but I am sure all of those toxic chemicals will eventually cause both short term & long term health issues. We may even see more birth defects, asthma, autism, ADHD in children. Even more cancer cases in every age group. I believe the damages to our environment are far higher than the benefits. In fact, I do not see how Maverick benefits from this. What about the dangers of a derailment? It would be even more disastrous than in Ohio as the Rio Grande river is huge and passes by so many cities in southwest Texas. The Rio Grande is ecological property. It is invaluable to the ecosystem providing vital water for diverse uses, sustaining wildlife and riparian ecosystems. It represents the most extensive ecologically intact aquatic and riparian habitat in the Chihuahuan Desert. Water is life and this river is our main source This is definitely not a good place for such railroad. I don't understand why the mayor never officially informed us. He should have sent us a letter. The majority is still unaware.
