I strongly oppose of this project for the following reasons: Firstly, transporting Hazardous Materials rail would significantly increase the risk of chemical spills, leaks and explosions, releasing toxic substances in to the environment, endangering the lives of residents and causing property damage. Additionally, the construction of a Hazardous Material Pit poses a significant threat to our community’s SOLE SOURCE of water, the Rio Bravo River, as it could potentially lead to contamination in the event of accidents or spills. Secondly, our community already experiences traffic congestion during non-peak hours, and the addition of this project would worsen the problem, potentially delaying Emergency response times in critical situations. I witnessed firsthand when one of our neighbor’s houses caught on fire. It took the Fire Department approximately 35 minutes to get there; by then, the flames we uncontrollable, causing another neighbor house on another street to caught on fire, 90% of both houses were damaged, luckily both families were able to get out safely with minor injuries. It was devastating to be able to witnessed our neighbors’s houses burn down. In case of an Emergency, our closest Fire Department Station with Emergency Response unit is located approximately 3 miles away with an additional 5 miles to our main Hospital. These distances are based without all the traffic congestion. Thirdly, the increased pollution from this project would further deteriorate our Air Quality, leading to a rise in lung cancer cases and other respiratory diseases. Additionally, our local wildlife, such as deers and hogs, would be negatively impacted by the project, affecting the delicate ecological balance of our area. Furthermore, constructing the railroad tracks in a flood zone area poses a severe risk of a major catastrophic accident. Lastly, implementing this project would disrupt the tranquility of our neighborhoods and adversely affect our community’s way of life.
