As a Kings Park resident who lives and works very close to the proposed site, I am extremely concerned about the impact this will have on our community and the environment. I found that the tone of the report seemed to give the benefit of the doubt to Towline- as if they would remain within the parameters of the proposed plan and would take voluntary steps to mitigate some of the negative impact of the proposal. I don’t believe these assumptions are realistic. For example, while truck traffic will likely decrease in the short-term, trucks would still be needed to transport ash from Covanta to the location of the proposed tracks. Additionally, the freight rail would be used to deliver goods such as cars, which are currently not delivered to this area via rail. Although there may be fewer trucks leaving the area with ash and debris, there will of course be many more trucks leaving with cars and other materials brought in via rail to the proposed location. Might not there also be trucks transporting debris FROM other locations TO this proposed location? In the medium- and long-terms, I can only see an increase in trucking-- the very thing this proposal was supposed to decrease. The fact that we already have a heavy industrial area so close to a densely-populated residential area is very concerning. There are two schools right down the road, less than half of a mile from the proposed facility. I am already concerned about the quality of water and air in this area. There is no doubt that we need to do something about our garbage situation on Long Island, but I wish we looked for solutions that involved reducing garbage rather than finding more elaborate ways to ship it elsewhere. Thank you for your consideration.
