We strongly oppose the proposed rail yard on Town Line Road. We are residents of Fort Salonga and our well-being and quality of life will suffer dramatically if this rail yard is allowed to come through our small town. Fort Salonga is supposed to be a hamlet, however, town, state and federal officials want to change the character of this town and ignore the environmental consequences of bringing industrial business, waste, pollution (air, water and land as well as noise), increased traffic through here. My family has resided in Fort Salonga for over 30 years. We first resided off of Bread and Cheese Hollow Road and now off of Route 25A. This area has already been the target of major environmental blight through heavy industry, which is not even properly zoned, managed or supervised in this area. There is a concern for the amount of carcinogens in the air, water and land here and the cancer cluster that no one seems to talk about. Breast cancer, ovarian and lung cancer abounds in this area. My mother and neighbors that I have personally known have succumbed to such right here in our neighborhoods. It is irresponsible to do this to our children and families in a residential area. This is a significant public health and environmental issue and there are comprehensive studies that show living in close proximity to a rail yard has significant air pollution exposure and concurring community challenges. We also have our wetlands and aquifer that will be negatively impacted by this proposed rail yard and to state otherwise is negligent at best. The transportation of goods and waste will adversely impact our health and surrounding environment. These impacts are felt through air pollution, climate change, injuries, noise, landscape disruption, loss of a sense of community and character of the area and stress and anxiety from the air, noise, land and water pollution. Who is looking out for the residents of Fort Salonga and Kings Park? This is a carcinogen in our yards!
