HIGH Emissions, Traffic, Noise Future negative impact to our Health. February 5, 2024 Andrea Poole, PMP Environmental Protection Specialist Surface Transportation Board 395 E Street, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20423 RE: Surface Transportation Board Decision, Docket No. FD_36575 Dear Ms. Andrea Poole, My name is Maria O’Brien, and I am writing to you as a mother and resident of the Fort Salonga community to voice my opposition to the proposed construction of a railyard on Townline Road immediately south of Pulaski Road. The community discovered this proposal last year, March 2023, AFTER the Town of Smithtown made the necessary allowances for this project to proceed. The community was not given any opportunity to weigh in on this proposal, which should give you pause for alarm! This suburban neighborhood is an area filled with homes, families, and nature preserves, and having this railyard built so close to us will negatively impact the surrounding area, the health and welfare of the residents, their children, and the ecosystem we fight so hard to preserve. We already have commercial businesses on Townline Road. Bringing in a Railyard and building a warehouse to house an additional fifty tractor-trailers will, not only, increase truck activity that would negatively impact transportation for residents and more importantly, severely heighten the carbon emissions that will negatively impact the HEALTH of the surrounding neighborhoods. Please look closely at the map attached to this email, and you will see the surrounding homes, North Ridge Primary School, Commack High School located just down the road southbound, and Orchard Farms on Pulaski Rd, to name a few. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and for giving me a chance to explain how this project will adversely impact our environment. Sincerely, MARIA O'BRIEN
