The reprise of photos of the "Blue Planet" from the Apollo 11 moon landing of 50 years ago reminds us that where we live is unusual, perhaps unique, it its ability to support life as we know it. At the same time, we are confronted with the reality that production and consumption of fossil fuels threatens the limits and resources of a climate that will support life. As well, it becomes increasingly clear that the way forward on the path of economic prosperity lies in the technologies of renewable sources of energy like wind and solar. Consider that the completion of a Uintah Basin Railway will aggravate air pollution in the Uintah Basin; greatly increase the demand for water in the water-intensive processes of fossil fuel production; threaten the goal of keeping global warming under 1.5 degrees C; and adversely affect Utah landscapes and public lands of far greater economic value that the hydrocarbons they harbor. A Uintah Basin Railway is a gravy train to the the wrong destination. Let's not get on board! It is time to actively support policies and initiatives that foster the prospect of a sustainable and prosperous future.
