Comments on the proposed Uinta Basin Railway oil train. I am a lifelong Utah resident who has worked and recreated in he Uinta Basin area most of my life. I have seen huge transformation in the quality of the environment, not just in terms of physical deterioration regarding air and water resources, but sight-view and aesthetics. I live in Grand County and struggle with a workable balance between land use for commerce, extraction and recreation. I also live on the planet earth and keep abreast of the overwhelming impact that we humans are having on the environment. Now is the time to be prioritizing sustainable energy and consciously sacrificing to limit fossil fuel consumption. It seems clear that there are moneyed interests that believe that the benefits of this proposed railway outweigh the negative impacts. But the questions loom large: "for whom is this a benefit and for whom is this a plan that will degrade quality of life and erode environmental balance?" The role of decision making bodies in an alleged democracy is to protect the common good, to secure a feasible future for posterity and to appreciate the reality of our impact of the life forces that sustain us. To allow the interests of an oligarchy to run unrestrained by the consideration of the future of the planet and the general well being of the general populous is irresponsible. Jobs must develop elsewhere. Industry that creates sources of sustainable energy are a prudent direction in which to proceed. Respectfully submitted, James A. Ferro Ph.D. Moab UT
