Comment re: Docket No. FD 36284 ATTN: Joshua Wayland I am commenting as a rural Utah citizen on the proposed Uinta Basin Railway project. I oppose this project for the following reasons: 1. Harmful impacts of increased oil production: regional air pollution. Oil production would increase up to four times the current level of extraction. Increased production will exacerbate already dangerous air pollution levels in the Uinta Basin. 2. Harmful impacts of increased oil production: increased carbon in the atmosphere. Increasing oil production four-fold is many steps in the wrong direction that Utah needs to move in order to help mitigate the effects of too much carbon in the atmosphere, i.e., global warming. 3. Harmful impacts: water shortages. A quadrupling of oil production in the Uinta Basin requires a lot of water--water that is in short supply in the region. 4. Harmful impacts: land degradation. Increased production on this scale will negatively impact the region's landscapes. 5. Harmful impacts: dangerous oil trains. The United States has refused to take commonsense steps to improve the safety of oil trains. Because of this, oil train transport is risky and poses dangers to the communities through which the trains travel. 6. Harmful impacts: taxpayer burden. The amount of oil recovered is not guaranteed, and taxpayers could be left paying part of the cost of the railway. 7. Harmful impacts: reliance on volatile economies. Fossil fuel ventures by nature operate on a boom-bust cycle. A wiser investment would be to move towards more stable, cleaner, and sustainable energy economies. 8. Finally, there has been little opportunity for public comment and participation. More information needs to be given about the project and its costs. There are too many potentially harmful impacts from this project, and I oppose it. Thanks for the chance to comment. Sincerely, Danielle
